There are many self-help books out there, ranging from all sorts of stuff, with extremely ludicrous titles. “How to Become a Millionaire in Ten Days” or “How to Hack your Brain” and the list goes on. It comes as no surprise to us that we are often our biggest critics. We constantly question our abilities, downplay our achievements, and convince ourselves that success is reserved for someone else — someone smarter, luckier, or more talented. But what if we asked “Why not me?” a little more?
Instead of waiting for things to come your way, asking yourself this question pushes you to take control. For example, let’s say you want to apply to this job position, but things like self-doubt are holding you back. Simply look at those in the position, and ask yourself “Why not me?” If they can do it, why can’t I? This helps boost your confidence and rewires your limiting beliefs that our brain has gotten so used to doing.
How can you apply this mentality?
1. Reframe Your Self-Doubt: When you catch yourself thinking, “I’m not good enough,” challenge that thought by asking, “Why not me?” We all start somewhere as beginners, and there is always a first to everything.
2. Take the First Step: Stop waiting for the perfect moment whether it’s applying for a job, or picking up a new hobby. Small steps are still progress!
3. Keep Showing Up: Consistency is key. Even when doubts creep in, push forward.
So, the next time you hesitate before chasing a big goal or landing that dream job, stop and ask: “Why not me?”
