SFU LYFE’s main objective is to help you find what you love, form healthy habits, and meet great people. We do this by providing you resources for both professional and personal development.
On the professional side, we’ve brought in speakers like Patrick McAndless, an industry professional with 45+ years of experience in the mining industry and a guest lecturer at 400+ educational institutions across the globe, to lead our personal branding workshop. We’ve also had SFU career advisor Jo-Anne Nadort, who ran an interactive career planning workshop. These events are catered towards helping students broaden their horizons in terms of what’s possible as a career path and really giving students an idea of what it’s like in the workplace by hearing the stories of the professionals we bring in.
On the personal side of things, we’ve hosted events like our club socials. These are catered towards helping students build their network, connect with other like-minded individuals, and develop themselves personally through group discussion and goal setting.
SFU LYFE has grown and expanded a lot since its early days, and now we’re introducing a new branch of our club—LYFE-EXP. LYFE-EXP is focused on putting on amazing events and creating memorable experiences that wrap aspects of both personal and professional development into one zesty package.
LYFE-EXP launches with two key activities in mind:
- Community Projects (covered in this post)
- ????? (what could this be? further details in a future post)
Community Projects
Events we host are no easy task to bring to fruition. There is a lot of planning and organization, and we realize that the gap between each of our events can be quite lengthy. SFU LYFE Community Projects are here to fill that space.
Community Projects are, essentially, collaborative ongoing activities led by our community members (you!). Getting involved is simple (just let us know you’re interested!) and is a great way for you to get involved with and connect with other members of the club outside of our main events.
You may be wondering, what type of projects and activities are there?
Everything from wellness workshops to guided meditation to journaling to…well, our club executives have come up with some ideas, have a look!
1. Chapbook Workshop 📝
For students who like creative writing and want to explore it! We can have things like writing prompts, writing workshops, peer editing, and critique circles.
GOAL🎯: At the end of the workshop, students will put together their own chapbook (a small collection of your own writing). It’s a rewarding, artistic, and creative experience for everyone to foster good relationships.
2. Map Buddies 🗾
A friendship-building community project where members are partnered up and work together as a duo in playing Geoguessr.
GOAL🎯: Help students stay connected with each other and make new friends online
3. Student Success Workshops 🌟
A small series of workshops/talks will be delivered by the members of the executive team of SFU LYFE every two weeks. They will be short 2 -5-minute videos and will be based on topics related to student success (time management, exam tips, conquering your first semester, and more.
GOAL🎯: Help students to grow and allow SFU LYFE executives to share their knowledge/experience at SFU to those who need help.
4. Mindful Management 🧘♀️
An ongoing member-led project that focuses on helping students with lining healthier and productive lives. Every week, the project leader will present a work-life balance topic relating to health and/or productivity, and students will have conversations relating to this topic and create action plans that they can implement and be held accountable for the next week.
GOAL🎯: Help students with lining healthier and productive lives.
5. 30 Days of Gratitude Challenge 🌻
For one month, members will be asked to answer a question related to gratitude every day on our Discord channel or Facebook group.
GOAL🎯: Encourage members to think positive and be grateful for little things that happen around them on that day.
6. Try Something New Series 🤩
Encourage students to spend a day picking a new skill that they’ve always been interested in but don’t know enough about it or have always been too unsure to start.
GOAL🎯: Encourage students to try something that might aid them in their professional or personal life
In a poll we conducted on our Instagram and Discord, the winner of our first community projects is Student Success Workshops! If your first choice wasn’t picked, not to worry. All of these projects will be implemented in the near future.
